Dena Agent : As one of the three major components of a car, the transmission’s importance goes without saying. With continuous advancements in automotive manufacturing, transmissions have evolved into various types. What are the respective advantages and disadvantages of each? Today, Xiaobao will explore this with you.
01 Dana Transmission – AT Automatic Transmission
An AT transmission, also known as a “hydraulic automatic transmission,” consists of a hydraulic torque converter, a planetary gear set, an electronic control system, and a hydraulic control system.
The hydraulic torque converter functions like the clutch in a manual transmission, transmitting power through the high-speed flow of fluid. Because the components are separated by fluid, it offers improved stability; however, since it is not a rigid connection, some power loss occurs.
The core of an automatic transmission is its ability to shift gears automatically, allowing the vehicle to seamlessly transition between different gear ratios simply by operating the accelerator pedal. Typically, depending on the vehicle’s trim level, it may be equipped with a 4-speed, 6-speed, or 8-speed automatic transmission.
Automatic transmissions are easy to operate. Typically, gear changes are not required while driving. However, their lower transmission efficiency results in relatively higher fuel consumption.

02 Dana‑Trasmission’s CVT Continuously Variable Transmission
The transmission of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) relies on frictional torque generated between a belt or steel belt and conical pulleys. You can think of it simply as two sets of conical pulleys connected by a steel belt: at low gear, the smaller-diameter driving pulley drives the larger-diameter driven pulley. As the gear ratio increases, the driving pulley continues to grow in diameter while the driven pulley shrinks.
This operating principle delivers a smooth driving experience during gear shifts and offers relatively good fuel efficiency, though the driving feel tends to be more… Good , maintenance costs will be higher.
It offers excellent ride comfort, with no feeling of jolts, and delivers a highly comfortable driving experience. However, its torque-handling capability is relatively limited, and it responds more slowly to changes in speed.
03 DANA‑branded transmission – DCT dual‑clutch transmission
Dual-clutch transmissions are categorized as dry‑type or wet‑type; the dry type relies on air for cooling, while the wet type uses oil. Compared with the dry type, the wet type exhibits significantly better thermal performance.
A dual-clutch transmission essentially consists of two manual gearboxes: one manages gears 1, 3, and 5, while the other handles gears 2, 4, and 6. As a result, it delivers rapid gear shifts with minimal power loss.
However, due to the complex shift patterns of dual-clutch transmissions, they are prone to malfunctions over time and require timely adjustments. Consequently, when encountering challenging road conditions, the advantages of a dual-clutch transmission become less pronounced.
It offers quick gear shifts, excellent fuel efficiency, and the ability to handle high torque. However, production costs are high, and inconsistent tuning by some manufacturers can lead to issues such as jerking or stalling. It also struggles in heavy traffic conditions.
04 Dana‑Trasmission – AMT Semi‑Automatic Transmission
At its core, an AMT is a manual transmission. It simply uses a computer to assist with gear shifting—specifically, the ECU handles both clutch engagement and gear selection—significantly reducing the driver’s workload.
The major advantage of an AMT transmission is its cost. Compared with a conventional automatic transmission (AT), an AMT has a much simpler internal structure and is commonly found in many entry-level vehicles.
However, the shift quality of an AMT transmission is rather mediocre. During gear changes, there’s a noticeable sense of frustration. This stems from the fact that, when the clutch engages, the AMT abruptly cuts the throttle to cut power.
It offers higher transmission efficiency and improved fuel economy. However, during driving, it feels less refined and provides lower comfort.
The above are four common types of transmissions. We’ve briefly outlined their respective advantages and disadvantages, but in reality, the factors that influence them and their operating principles can vary considerably. What different perspectives do you have on transmissions?
