Dana Spicer The hydraulic torque converter uses ATF (automatic transmission fluid) as its working medium to multiply the torque from the engine and transmit it to the automatic transmission (planetary gear set). A Dana‑Spicer hydraulic torque converter consists of a pump impeller, a turbine, a one‑way clutch, a stator, and a converter housing that encloses all these components. The automatic transmission fluid supplied by the oil pump is contained within the converter. The rotation of the engine and the pump impeller forces a powerful flow of fluid out of the pump impeller, thereby causing the turbine to rotate.

Modern automobiles typically employ torque converters with more components. These include the impeller—directly connected to the engine—the turbine—coupled to the automatic transmission’s input shaft—the stator—mounted on the pump shaft and equipped with a one-way clutch—and the lock-up clutch (TCC), which mechanically links the impeller and turbine.
Dana Spicer When the hydraulic torque converter is cut radially, the pump impeller and the turbine do not come into contact; a small clearance of 3–4 mm exists between them. In a Dana Spicer hydraulic torque converter, the output shaft—also the transmission’s input shaft—is connected to the turbine via splines, while the stator is linked to the pump shaft through splines in a one-way clutch, thereby ensuring the stator is locked in one direction.
The lock-up clutch is located at the front end of the torque converter’s turbine and has the structure shown in Figure 4. It consists of a lock-up piston, a torsional damper, and a turbine drive plate. The lock-up piston is connected to the torsional damper and can move axially. The torsional damper and the turbine drive plate are linked by damping springs; when the lock-up clutch engages, these springs help to attenuate torsional vibrations. The turbine drive plate is riveted to the front end of the turbine, while friction linings are bonded to the front face of the torque converter housing (or to the front face of the lock-up piston).
Functions of the Dana Spicer hydraulic torque converter:
Power Transmission: Under various operating conditions, engine power is transmitted to the transmission either hydraulically or mechanically.
Speed reduction and torque multiplication: When the turbine shaft speed is low, it can increase the engine’s output torque and reduce the transmission’s output speed, making it easier to start the vehicle.
Buffering vibration: due to Dana Spicer The hydraulic torque converter relies on hydraulic power to transmit torque, thereby reducing torsional vibrations in the engine and minimizing the transmission of vibrations from the vehicle’s drivetrain back to the engine.
Acts as an automatic clutch: when the engine is running and the transmission is in gear, it can keep the vehicle stationary.
Transmission oil pump drive: The oil pressure generated by the pump serves as the power source for the automatic transmission’s internal hydraulic system and shift‑actuating mechanisms; the pump is driven by the torque converter.
Acting as a flywheel: The torque converter can increase the rotational inertia of the engine’s flywheel, performing a function similar to that of a conventional flywheel and ensuring smooth engine operation.
